Workplace Applications Software

Built-in Help System

By Darlene Hunt

Workplace Applications is happy to announce the introduction of comprehensive on-line Help documentation invoked from within the Workplace Applications software suite. As new features are added to the software, the companion Help file will include in-depth discussions regarding the added capabilities.

The NEWEST version 2.25.123, of Workplace Applications is available for downloading. It is important to download the latest version of the software to keep Workplace Applications current and working at peak efficiency. Included with this software release will be software fixes and integration of the Help file with the software.

To get version 2.25.123 of the software; which includes the Help file :

  • Select the Software Update menu item under the Tools menu on the menu bar.

OR

  • From the Internet slider, click the Program Updates icon:

OR

Then...

  • Click the link on the Web page and save the update file (an executable program that self-installs the update) to your desktop.

  • Exit Workplace Applications

  • Double click the desktop icon in order to run the update executable

  • Delete the desktop icon after update is complete. You can now start the application again

Note: Consult with your company's IT staff if you have difficulty updating your software using any of these methods.

How to get Help:

  • Pressing F1 will always bring up help that is context sensitive. This mean that wherever you move the cursor on the window, when you press F1, the help displayed will be a topic related to the feature pointed to by the mouse.

  • When you move a mouse pointer over a feature and leave the mouse pointer there to hover over it, a small window with a yellow background will display a bit of text describing the feature the mouse is pointing to.

  • Go to Help menu item to start the Help file that is used just like any Windows-based help file browser. Through the Help file interface, you have searching capabilities, the ability to browse the help topics (via the Contents tab) and an index to assist in finding the topic most closely matching your needs. It also has a tab called Favorites where you can put links to selected help topics that you want to reference on a regular basis. When you locate a topic you want to refer to on a regular basis, click on the Favorites tab and click the button labeled Add at the bottom of the Help file interface.

  • If you need additional help, you can always contact us at (336) 834-8775 or email us at support@workplacegroup.net.

Conventions:

  • All icons used are the Windows XP representation (i.e., as the symbol to close a window).

  • Images of screen shots of the software are included with many of the Help topics. A bright pink circle is drawn on the image to direct you to a location on the window referred to in the Help topic.

  • Ctrl means to hold down the key on your keyboard labeled Ctrl along with some other letter key (i.e., Ctrl+s to save the data on the window).

  • ALT means to hold down the key labeled ALT along the bottom of the keyboard along with some other letter key (i.e., Alt+R to reset in the Find Employee dialog window).

  • The title of each Reference topic guides you to the location on the window of the referenced item and what kind of control object it is. For example:

"Graphs Menu; Health and Safety Menu Item"

…is interpreted as: The specific item, Health and Safety, is a menu item

  • Operations that give you multiple ways to perform an action are separated by the word "or" underlined and bolded. For example:

"Click the button labeled OK or click the Close Window button in the top right corner of the window."

  • The names of controls (text boxes, command button, drop-down boxes, etc.) are shown as bolded and italicized (i.e., "the button labeled OK" refers to .

  • When a word or phrase is displayed as green characters, then that item is a click-able link.
    • If the underlining of a link is dashed, then the link will display as a pop-up window overlaying the current window. To exit from this pop-up window, left button mouse click anywhere on the window or press the Esc key.

    • If the underlining of a link is solid, then the link display in its own window. To return to the linked page's origin page, navigate by means of the button labeled Back will display as a pop-up window

  • The Help file has been broken down into specific areas: Reference, How To's, Definitions, FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions), and Articles. The heading of the help page will indicate the category of page you are reading.

  • Instructions in the body of a Help text file may make reference to nested menu items. For example, the following statement,

"Click the Calibration menu item under the Tools;Audio menu items located on the menu bar,"

...means navigating the menu bar by going down three levels; first the Tools menu item, then selecting the Audio menu item and lastly the Calibration menu item.

To print your own manual:

Enter the help file from the Program Help menu item under the About menu on the menu bar. Go into any one of the "little purple books" under the Contents top tab within the Help window. Click the Print button in this window. A message box will display where you can either print just that topic or all its subtopics as well as the selected topic. Please note: This can be a very large printout. Some of the graphics may not print out very well. This is an unfortunate limitation of Microsoft's Help system that controls our Help feature.

If you find an error or omission in the manual:

Please regarding the error or omission. If you find wording that is misleading, incorrect, ambiguous or simply not plainly said, we welcome your comments and suggestions. We are interested in clarifying our help file so it is a more user-friendly document; thus more healthful. If a topic is not covered or is not easily found, please let us know. Please with as much detail regarding the problem or issue as you can as soon as you discover an issue. We promise we will reply with information on how the issue is being addressed.
